  • Technical Barriers Still Primary Cause for Lack of HIE Among Acute Care Hospitals

    Although nearly all hospitals in the U.S. have the basic infrastructure to support HIE, the latest ONC Data Brief (No. 25, August 2015) reports that more than half of all hospitals admitted experiencing “technical barriers” to finding, sending and receiving data with other healthcare organizations and hospitals (AKA, exchange partners). The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) identified Find, Send, Receive and Use in its “Nationwide Interoperability Roadmap” as the critical technical capabilities to accomplish true interoperability between acute and ambulatory healthcare settings. If we are to achieve nationwide interoperability, all electronic health record (EHR) systems must have all four of these capabilities. But they don’t.
